In 1911 and 1913 the Greenwood Index published a series of motor tours that the editor and some trusted associates took around Greenwood County. These lengthy articles described the communities around the county and related local history and legends. A century later, the “Touring Greenwood County” series is an invaluable snapshot of a county at a moment in time.

Created with the permission of the Index-Journal, our book is a complete republication of these articles for the first time since they originally ran. The book grew out of a discussion I had with local historian Ralph Scurry at an event in January 2020. (For the record, Ralph Scurry is a different Ralph from my Ralph. My world contains multiple Ralphs. It’s fun!)

All articles are presented in their entirety (more than 200,000 words) and most of the photographs that originally ran with the articles are presented where possible. The articles are typeset for easy reading, and sidebars and footnotes offer additional information. An appendix shows how certain locations from the tours look now.

Touring Greenwood County is available from the Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society webstore.
